Chapter 10

Bastien

“Oh my! How do you do that?” Claire leaned forward, inspecting her face in the mirror, lifting her hand to it but stopping just shy of touching. “I look flawless.”

“You’re beautiful, even without makeup,” Bastien said, squeezing her shoulder.

“Thank you. It hardly feels like I’m wearing anything. Whenever I do this for myself, all I can feel is something thick and uncomfortable against my skin. This feels…light.”

“Sometimes, less is more, but it also helps to have the right makeup, too. I can leave you a list of what I used so you can get yourself some if you want to.”

“I know what you should do!” Claire turned, a smile breaking out across her face, making her look radiant. “You should do makeup tutorials for people—either online videos or face-to-face ones. People love learning how to do things like this. You’d make a fortune, and that’s just from the people we know.” Claire laughed, her mother joining her.

“You’re not wrong, sweetheart. It’s an idea if nothing else, Bastien.”

Claire turned to the mirror again, and Bastien’s heart swelled at the joy on her face. This was why he did makeup. This right here. The happiness, joy and euphoria that swept across people’s faces when they saw what he could do.

“Who’s going next?”

“Alice,” Christine said.

“Mama, I thought you wanted to go first so you could get yourself ready?” Alice said.

“I’ve changed my mind. I want to see both my girls have their makeup done first. Everything else can wait. I’m enjoying myself.”

“As you wish.”

Bastien waited until Alice had settled herself in the seat, pulling her robe tighter against her neck. He glanced at her reflection in the mirror and guessed at the colouring he’d need. Searching through his case, he found a couple of similar colours, then squirted some onto the back of his hand. Holding them up to her skin, he chose the nearest, then set out a few more essentials he needed.

“So, Bastien, how are things going with Logan?”

Bastien’s hands trembled at the man’s name, and he turned to his case to hide his face, which was no doubt filling with colour despite his own makeup. “Um, we’re all right.”

“All right?” Claire sighed. “What has he done?”

“What?” He glanced over his shoulder, forgetting about hiding his face. “He hasn’t done anything,” he said, wincing when his voice sounded less than convinced.

“He’s my brother. I know when he’s being an ass.”

“Claire! Maybe Bastien doesn’t want to talk about it with us. We are Logan’s family, after all.”

“No, it’s not that…um…” He blew out a breath. “I’ve not really talked to him since we left here last weekend.”

“So, I ask again. What did he do?”

Bastien concentrated on moisturising Alice’s face and gathering his thoughts before having a huge debate with himself over whether he should be discussing this with Logan’s family. He didn’t have anyone else he could use as a sounding board, and if he mentioned it to Cody, the man would just persuade him to move in with the guy.

“Logan knows my…situation and asked me if I wanted to move in.
